Draft a response to One Writer's Beginnings. Read the synthesis materials. Read the prompt first, brainstorm, and create a possible thesis statement. Then read and annotate the supplemental material highlighting lines that you may use in support of your own argument.

#47-Describe each member of the Parsons family.
#48- "A nation that is afraid to let its people judge truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people." -JFK  Copy. Paraphrase. Identify the subject. Relate to 1984. Also, define character, characterization, setting, and theme. Answer the following: Describe Ms. Parsons. Use a quote from the text. Why does Ms. Parsons look the way she does? Why do the children want to see the hanging, and what does this tell us about them? Why would a government brainwash children? What is "thoughtcrime"? In what city, province, and superstate does Winston live?

#56- "She hated the party, and said so in the crudest  words but she made no general criticism of it" (p. 110). Explain this quote. What does it mean that she "made no general criticism of it"?
#57- Read page 112: "In a way she realized that she herself was doomed, that sooner or later the Thought Police would catch her and kill her, but with another part of her mind she believed that it was somehow possible to construct a secret world in which you could live as you chose. All you needed was luck and cunning. She did not understand that there was no such thing as happiness..." 1. How does Julia's thinking differ from Winston's? 2. Does her age have anything to do with the way she thinks? 3. Why might people from different generations think differently?
