"The single most important activity for building the knowledgerequired for eventual success in reading is READING ALOUD to children. Its a practice that should continue throughout the grades." Jim Trelease (The Read-Aloud Handbook)
What do you do when you read aloud to your child?
* You build listening comprehension.
* You build vocabulary.
* You become a role model for your child.
* You create background knowledge which is important for your child in
order to make connections to their learning.
* You spend quality time with your child.
What if reading is difficult for me?
* Go to the Rahway Public Library and look for books on tape that both you
and your child can read and listen to.
Is it expensive?
* The public library is free!
Is my child too old to be read aloud to?
* Never! Pick a book that is interesting to your child. Vary the type of
book you read-each time. Pick a different genre. (fiction, non-fiction, fantasy, etc) You
might be surprised at the great adventures each book brings to you both!
Listening comprehension feeds speaking, reading, and writing
comprehension. Thus the more words a child hears, the easier will be
his/her entry into literacy.

Mrs. Marianne Bargiel
Dear Parents:
Welcome to the school year 2011-2012. I look forward to a year of learning and growth for all!
It is important that we work together to make this a great school year for your child. Much of our communication will take place daily in the communication book. If you need to speak to me, please call the school and I will return your call as quickly as I can. We can make time to speak when it is convenient for both of us, and I also check my email daily.
There are a variety of terms that you will hear about throughout the year, so here is an explanation of them for you. Please keep this handy so that you can refer to it during the year.
Themes- Each month will have several calendar related themes that will support our learning. Themes will be most evident in our social studies/science lessons, but they also will be in the literature we read. Please look for them in our monthly newsletters!
Work Centers- Instruction will take place in work centers. Work centers are small group instruction times throughout the day, for both literacy and math instruction. Students will be instructed on their level. Most lessons will be hands-on activities that will help students learn, develop, and practice their learning.
Assessments- Formative assessments drive instruction. Students will be assessed in both literacy and math, beginning in September. DRA2- DRA 2 is a reading assessment that will be used for students to determine reading levels, along with Dolch Sight Word Assessment. The results of these assessments will help determine where instruction begins, and how students will be grouped for learning.
Circle Time- We will have a daily circle time during the morning. Each circle time will have a topic and it will vary daily. For example, during the first week we will talk about Labor Day and different occupations that adults can have. It is important that the children learn to participate in conversation appropriately.
Communication Book- Each child will have a communication book that will relay information back and forth between home and school. Just as you want to know what your child is doing in school, it is important to let me know what your child does at home. Please check this book each night, write in it, and sign.
Work Envelope- This work envelope will contain any pencil and paper activities that your child completed during the week. Remember, many activities will be teacher made games or “hands-on” activities so you will not have a “pile of papers” each time the folder is sent home.
Folders- Please check your child’s folder each night. The folder transports any important notices, papers, communication book, etc. Please remove items that should stay home, and use the folder to put in the items that I need to see. Folders will be checked each morning.
Homework- You will find that your child’s homework will not be the “usual” homework that you might expect! In your child’s folder on Mondays will be a homework schedule for the week, and it will be posted on line. If I send home a “hands-on” activity, please remember to return it the next day. I will plan homework to meet your child’s needs (not everyone will get the same exact homework).
Birthdays- We would love to celebrate your child’s birthday in school. Please let me know a couple of days ahead of time if you would like to celebrate in school. Keeping it simple is best-a treat and perhaps a drink. Cupcakes are much better than cake, and easier to give out to the children.
Medical Issues/Allergies- If I am not already aware of any medical or allergy that your child has, please let me know immediately! There might be times when foods will be used during instruction. I will contact any parent of a child, who has dietary or allergy concerns, beforehand.
Attendance- It is important that your child attends school daily and is on time! Instruction begins immediately upon your child’s arrival to school, and being late means that instruction time will be lost. If your child is late, they must enter through the front door of the school to receive a late pass.
Specials-
As of September 6, our specials are on the following days:
Art- Tuesday
Music, Computers, and Library- Wednesday
Physical Education- Friday (sneakers, please!)
If our schedule changes, I will let you know. You can also check online for updates.
Snack- Snack will be provided to students each day. If any parent wants to donate a healthy snack for the class to share, it would be great!
Lunch/Recess- Recess is daily from 12:00-12:30, and Lunch follows from 12:30-1:00.
Play Chart- One way to help encourage positive behavior and team work is through our “play chart”. The word “play” is stenciled on graph paper. Each time the class gets a compliment from an adult that is not in our class, a square will be colored in. When the whole word is filled in, the children will enjoy a “play afternoon”.
Treasure Chest- Positive behavior is always encouraged and recognized. Students are awarded a trip to the “treasure chest” on Friday afternoons for appropriate behavior. Each child has individual goals.
I feel it is an honor to be your child’s teacher, and will work hard to provide them word-rich, warm and secure learning environment to help them grow in their confidence, independence, and their learning!
Let’s work together to make this a great year.
