92403_25043_0.pngThe following are questions that parents and students might have along with answers.

Who is Mr. Zech?

I am a graduate of Ramapo College of New Jersey (BA in English and Comparative Literature), and New Jersey City University (MA in Special Education and post graduate certification in Counseling). Some of my educational experience includes the following:

- Special Education Teacher, Rahway High School.
- Special Education Teacher, Beadleston High School.
- Special Education Teacher, Bayonne High School.
- Substitute Teacher, Jersey City Public Schools.
- Teacher Assistant, The Children Psychiatric Center, Morganville, New Jersey.

What other experience does Mr. Zech have?

In addition to these positions, I bring to Rahway High School's Guidance Department twenty-two years of corporate and private industry experience. The last position I held before embarking on my current career in education was in the exporting business, where I managed a department of twenty-four employees. For ten years I lived in the fast paced environment of Lower Manhattan, conducting international business, communicating with individuals on a global level, hiring and training personnel, and reporting daily the productivity of my department.

Why did Mr. Zech mention his corporate experience?

It is my intention to prepare my students for the world that awaits them, to furnish them with the tools necessary for sucess, and to guide them in a direction that conforms to their goals and aspirations.

A word for Seniors:

All Seniors should register for and take the SATs and perhaps the ACTs as well. Register on-line with collegeboard.com. If you receive free or reduced lunch, see the guidance department for a fee waiver.

Search for schools. Narrow your search down to four or five schools, including one reach and one safe school. Keep a calendar of deadlines. Contact schools and arrange to visit their campuses. Sign up for college appointments here at RHS.

Start working on your college essay.

Request recommendation letters from teachers, employers or supervisors at local organizations for churches to which you belong or volunteer.

Your counselor will be contacting you for a Senior Meeting. You will be given a Senior Survivor guide during that meeting. If you want a copy now, stop by the guidance department and we'll gladly give you one.

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation’s Student Leaders® Program is accepting applications for the 2012 program. On behalf of the New Jersey Relocation Council (NJRC), I would like to make you aware of a scholarship opportunity for local New Jersey High School seniors as well as High School seniors that recently relocated from qualified NJRC member corporations.

This application package is being sent to high schools in Bergen, Essex, Hunterdon, Morris, Somerset and Union Counties as well as to corporate members that are located in these same counties.  Eligibility for the scholarship program is limited to qualified students.

The New Jersey Relocation Council (NJRC) is a non-profit organization that brings together New Jersey corporations and relocation service providers for the primary purpose of providing educational information and current industry updates to its members about the relocation industry.

NJRC recognizes that successful relocations are those that not only help build talent for corporations and/or enhance the careers of their employees but also those that provide growth and added value to the families involved in moving.  Understanding that High School students, when relocated are faced with giving up the comforts of their homes, established friendships, involvement with school and community activities  and then forged into a new world where they must create and develop new lifestyles as well as handle numerous unexpected challenges.  While often difficult we have found that this time can also be inspirational and provide life learning lessons.  Whatever the impact, we know that each relocating student has a very special story, unique to their own experiences and stories that we feel need to be told!

Therefore, NJRC will award three (3) one thousand dollar ($1,000) scholarships to college bound high school seniors who have relocated into one of the six mentioned New Jersey counties or have been relocated anywhere in the world by one of our qualified corporate members.

Students should have moved between 9th (after 8th grade graduation) and 12th grade.  The award will be sent to the college that the student will be attending to assist with tuition, etc.

In addition, NJRC will apply to the national organization Worldwide ERC for additional matching funds that may be applied in varying amounts to the scholarship recipients or additional students.

NJRC will select scholarship winners based on the strength of their total package.  The student will be evaluated on academic performance, extra-curricular activities, and on their response to an essay addressing the way they handled the challenges associated with relocating to a new area and a new high school.   Regardless of whether the student receives the reward, ALL students will be considered winners and ALL stories will become an important addition to the NJRC story collection, entitled “Moving Beyond…. through the eyes of our future leaders”

We look for your assistance with the following items:

1)      Identifying eligible seniors based on the criteria that they have:

a.       Relocated more than 50 miles and changed schools due to a relocation, and

b.      A current cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0 (or equivalent achievement on a different scale)

2)      Making eligible students aware of this scholarship opportunity and encouraging their participation.  Please post the scholarship application on your website or in your newsletter to seniors.  Let me know if you need an electronic version to do so.

3)      Providing academic performance information including grades and major test scores (SAT) to accompany the student's application.

ARE YOU THE NEXT BUICK ACHIEVER?

It starts with good grades. But goes beyond.

A dedicated student. A leader in school. A volunteer worker. A college-bound and community-minded individual.

The Buick Achievers Scholarship Program wants to reward students who have succeeded both inside and outside of the classroom—and who may not be able to attend college without financial assistance. It's a reward for what you've made of yourself and the difference you are making for others.

The Buick Achievers Scholarship Program is offering:

Up to $25,000 per year for 100 first-time freshman or existing college students, renewable up to four years and one additional year for those entering a qualified five-year engineering program.
$2,000 one-time awards for an additional 1,000 students.

Applicants must:

  • Be high school seniors or graduates or be current undergraduate students
  • Plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited U.S. four-year college or university for the entire 2012–13 academic year (excluding proprietary and online schools)
  • Plan to major in a specified course of study that focuses on Engineering/Technology or select Design and Business-related programs of study. See the list of eligible majors.
Be interested in pursuing a career in the automotive or related industries
Be U.S. citizens and have permanent residence in the United States

Excluded from consideration are employees and relatives of employees of Scholarship Management Services, Scholarship America and their affiliates and subcontractors, and GM Foundation Directors, Officers, and staff and their relatives. Relatives of General Motors employees are eligible.

Scholarship recipients are selected based on the following factors:

Academic achievement and financial need
Participation and leadership in community and school activities, work experience and interest in pursuing a career in the automotive or related industry
Please note special consideration will be given to the following applicants: first-generation college, female, minority, military veteran or a dependent of military personnel

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship Management Services. All scholarship recipients may be subject to a criminal background check. Recipients of a Buick Achievers Scholarship shall not commit any act that indicates dishonesty or moral turpitude or that otherwise could materially injure the General Motors Foundation, Buick or General Motors Company's reputation. If such an act is committed by a Buick Achievers Scholarship Program recipient, the Buick Achievers Scholarship award shall immediately be revoked. In no instance will any Director or Officer of the General Motors Foundation or any employee of General Motors play a part in the selection. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

Recipients will be awarded one scholarship at either of the two award levels:

1,000 Buick Achievers Scholarships of $2,000
100 Buick Achievers National Scholarships of up to $25,000 per year, renewable for up to four years, and one additional year for those entering a five-year engineering program. The actual award amount will not exceed the total cost of the student's tuition, fees, books, supplies, required equipment, room and board and other allowable expenses, less other gift aid known at the time of application (scholarships, grants and other awards that do not have to be paid back). Bank of America is looking for tomorrow’s community leaders today. Since its inception in 2004, the Bank of America Student Leaders Program has recognized more than 1,600 exemplary high school juniors and seniors with a passion for improving their communities. The program helps students gain a greater understanding of how nonprofits create impact in the community and helps develop them as the next generation of community leaders through two components:

  • A summer 2012 eight-week paid internship with selected nonprofit organizations designed to provide opportunities for the students to develop and apply leadership skills through hands-on work experience, while raising their awareness of community issues addressed by their Host Organization.
  •  A week-long all-expense paid Student Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C., July 15-20. Conducted in partnership with the Close Up Foundation, the Summit introduces students to aspects of civic, social and business leadership and provides them with knowledge and skills they will use throughout their life to create positive community change.

Students can apply for the program by going to www.bankofamerica.com/neistudentleaders, or for more information on the Bank of America Charitable Foundation, please visit the website at http://www.bankofamerica.com/foundation. Please note the application deadline of January 25, 2012.
