African American Book Project
We selected a book from our library about an African American who made a difference in society.  


African American Book Project

Due January 31, 2012

Rough copy on regular paper due January 12, 2012

1. Read your book

2.  Identify at least five important events in this person's life and how this person has improved the world.  

3.  Complete a rough draft of your final project.  Must be turned in by 1/12/12 for a teacher check.  Will be returned immediately.  

4.  When you are ready to create your book, you will need 4 pieces of letter size construction paper which I will give you.  

5.  Fold each piece in half to create two panels on each paper.  

6.  Glue or tape the edges of the papers together vertically.  

7.  Once all of the papers are attached you will have eight panels.  The timeline should fold like an accordion when completed.  

Each panel should have a careful illustration and text.  See rubric for more information about how your project will be assessed.  


The Rubric:  

Your writing must do the following for you to pass this assignment.  
1. Text will include details
2.  Events of the person's life are in order and dates are shown.  
3.  It can be read easily (writing is legible)
4.  Panel 8 includes a complete paragraph on how this person has made a difference in the lives of others.  
5.  No mistakes in using capitals, periods, and spelling.  

Your picture should:  
1.  Be in colored pencil or marker.  
2.  Show careful work.  
3.  Appropriately illustrate what you have written about on that panel.

Back Pack Essay

As a result of some students carrying items that are against school rules, the school district is reconsidering the"policy on backpacks" in the school's classrooms.  The school board president is asking students to write letters supporting or opposing this proposal.  Think about the effect this would have on you and the students in your school.  What are the advantages?  What are the disadvantages?  What is your point of view?

Write a leter to the school board president in which you support or oppose the decision to allow backpacks in the school's classroom.  Use examples and other evidence to support your decision.

SUMMER READING PROJECT IS DUE 10/10/11

                                                                Summer Reading Project

Complete any ONE of the following assignments:  

1.      Summarize the book in poem form with rhyme, rap, song, etc. (minimum of 20 lines)
2.      Top 10 list  - list ten things you learned from this book.  (in poster form)
3.      Create a collage on poster board of relevant quotes, pictures, images from the book.
4.      Construct a diorama (three dimensional scene which includes models of people, buildings, plants, and animals)of one of the main events of the book.  Include a written description of the scene.  
5.      Create a mini-comic book relating to a chapter or scene from the book.  

We will be presenting to the class.
